Is this the toughest football based sport in the world?

Post by Dr.Strangelove » Mon Dec 28, 2009 1:44 pm

For over 20 yrs now the profesional Australian based AFL All-Stars and the amatuer Irish based GAA All-Stars have faced off in a hybrid verion of both their respective codes. Although the Aussies have the advantage of being professional players (If an Aussie gets injured he still recieves wages from his club, whilst an injured Irishman gets nothing from his 9-5 job), the Irish have the advantage of playing with a round ball (whereas in Australia they are used to playin with a rugby or american football shaped ball). Its 15 per side on a rectangle shaped pitch. Also this is the only international platform for all of these players as their respective sports are not popular outside of their countries.

In the early days of this sport Ireland's guile brought them glory till the Aussie selectors decided to pick more aggressive players over skillfull ones. This has proved successful for them but won them few friends in the northern hemisphere.

The rules of the sport are complicated and to be honest I doubt either side know them fully and every games decends into a bloodbath. With no players wearing padding or safety gear injuries are inevitable.

Usually there are 2 tests played per yr with the winner decided on who has score the most points over the 2 games.

So have a look at the video and decide for yourself.

The highlight is the tackle by the Aussie numer 2 "Johnson" at 6.06

He ended up getting banned from International Rules Football for 5 yrs over it, which effective was a life ban as when he returns he'd probably be to old to play. Plus also the fact I cant see him being able to enter Ireland again without losing his kneecaps.

Your Football, as in our Soccer... Yea, I used to play our Football, your soccer in highschool, It can get pretty rough, but really you dont feel anything through the plastic armour... Lol. But ya, none of those boys had pads or gear, so i suppose that would be rough

I dont think our street football even got as violent as that.

omlow isn't an Aussie, as far as I can remember he's English, though don't hold that against him, it's not his fault! ;)
