Research and what influences discoveries

Post by Isotope » Sun Aug 23, 2009 4:08 pm

Alright, first of all if there are any topics on this subject i apologize, only the search function wouldn't let me search "research" :x

Anyhow, What I was wondering is what exactly on a colony influences what discoveries are made, we already have these tavern owners telling us that government affects what discoveries are made, but I was wondering if it was possibly more complex than that.

Of course I think one factor about research is that there is always going to be an element of luck involved but perhaps experienced builders and such could post here if they know of any other factors or inklings that they might have that could possibly affect what discoveries are made.

One I was thinking of was how adjusted the research slider bar is, or maybe for example: colonies with low population during research have a higher chance to discover weather prediction maybe? or maybe if there are no population growing resources in the refinery and the population is shrinking there is a higher chance.

Any ideas feel free to post them.

Probably a coincidence and all but I decided to experiment (would probably be better with like 5 or so planets) but i experimented on one which obviously means it could just be luck.

Here's what i did, i filled a volcano up to 500 population and put in 400 of organics, medicine, and anaerobes, set the government on socialism and the research bar to 100% and left it for a while.

I logged back in today to find out it had researched weather prediction level 1, and bacteria farming level 1... Could this possibly be at least the slightest bit to do with the fact the government is socialism and the best for population growth? who knows! which means i am going to have to try this on 5 planets for each government and see the outcome, I will post the results here as it progresses.

what that tavern thing means is that directorship gets a research boost.

oceans get a special building which also boosts research so you can easily negate them being one of the worst polluting planets by taking 15 or so points from harvesting/millitary and dumping them on environment research. you will need to lower taxes a bit to compensate if you had it on socialism or democracy, though it isnt a big loss since the damn thing won't be disastering constantly anymore.
