Email support thanks

Development, Starport, Upcoming

Sweet, a blog!

Now I can spout out what I’m working on and what I’m about to be working on and spew game design ideas in more transparent fashion.   Back on topic…

I was talking to Sinistrad and he was complaining about in-game emails and having to check them on every server in the game.  So we thought it’d be cool if the game forwarded the mails to his inbox.  While working on the design it seemed to be a good feature for all everyone.  So next patch should allow you to forward along your in-game email.  I tag the mail with the servername, sender’s in-game name and the subject line.

So email support your thanks/complaints about email support?

Linux Support Added to Starport: Galactic Empires

Linux, Starport

Our latest patch introduces support for the game to run in Linux. The emulator “wine” is required, which is free-ware you can find at www.winehq.org. We haven’t had time yet to extensively test the game this way, but we think it’s playable. Please let us know on the forums if you have any problems.

We also launched a new permaverse last weekend, called Perma 6 Invasion Wars, which quickly assumed its position as most popular galaxy like a new perma usually does. The theme of this galaxy is intense competition over limited resources and so we made a smaller galaxy with extra star bases and difficult colony settings. A lot of players are having fun and forming corps to compete in the new galaxy, but some players are lamenting the creation of another galaxy and debating on the forums that the increase in galaxies spreads the player base too thin.

Things we’re working on now include improving the accuracy of the network engine so that player to player movement is smoother, adding a territorial view to the galaxy map to show the size and location of empires, and adding the new artifact/item system that will offer a lot more artifacts, with a wider range of abilities, but finite lifespans.

Welcome to the Starport: Galactic Empires Blog

Starport

Welcome to the Starport: Galactic Empires developer blog.

It’s so exciting to be in the field of software development right now, and to have a live program that people use every day! For seven years it was my dream to create an online space game. We opened Starport to the public in 2004 as a free game with optional payments for virtual items. It was popular enough to keep us going and so we’ve been upgrading the software and servicing the community of players ever since.

This blog will cover what direction the Starport game service is going and what the developers are working on. Stay tuned for weekly updates and subscribe to the rss feed for up-to-the-minute news on upcoming game-play features, new galaxies, and other interesting details from the perspective of the developers.

Right now we have a talented new artist named Marcela Roberts working on the player portraits. She is doing a great job. I’m optimizing some code for better performance. CaffCoder is working on an option to receive real email from starport servers when your character receives mail in the game.
